With a good supply of good water, not much past 40 days. Vitamin C and other essential nutrients start a serious path toward exhaustion leading to death on a total fast.

Some things could go wrong earlier and if you come off an extended fast with a regular or super size meal you could kill yourself.

Unless you have angels attending to your needs after a long fast; you must take as many days coming off the fast as you spent on it. You need good information on how to break the fast and the will power to stick with it.

The body will live off fat and muscle stores at the rate of two pounds per day for every day without food. Right now I could go for a little over two weeks just to reach my so-called ideal weight.

Fasts of one, two and three weeks are not uncommon. Seven days has been my longest with another seven days of very limited eating.

Going without food is something different than a starvation diet.

I am sure that there is a record over 40 days somewhere that fits your question. My own opinion is that a total fast cannot last over 150 days under any circumstances. The case of
Moses in the Bible cannot be considered a fast as we are speaking of here.

Fasts that are reported to last years are very very questionable.

it depends on how much the person weighs.

I believe there used to be an old saying that was

you can live 3 minutes without air
3 days without water
3 weeks without food.

But some people can go longer than that without breathing - 4 or 5 minutes, and some deep pearl divers can for without air for 6 to 8 minutes. (don't try that at home.) so it is reasonable to assume that their is also a variation in the other numbers.

Please note that some of the body's systems would start failing well before 3 weeks was up - damage could be permanent even if one did not die.

A person can survive for up to 3 weeks without food. Up to 3 days without water. Up to 3 minutes without air. It's a 3-3-3 rule.
