There are many online sites that teach German for free...

http://www.free-german-lessons.de/free/WELCOME.php
http://gut.languageskills.co.uk/index.html
http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/

My husband and I have learned Spanish and Russian. My husband also speaks German. He actually says it is easy for English speakers to learn German.

If you would like to explore other methods of learning I would also suggest these products that have helped us. We use BOTH the Rosetta Stone (a computer program) and the Pimsleur Method (audio cd's). These two are the best things on the market.

Each approaches learning the language a different way. And I have found using both really helps round out my learning.

The Pimsleur method is super fast and the best to start with. You are given 30 minute lessons you listen and speak with. You start with basic and keep adding until you are able to have a full conversion.

Rosetta Stone will help with reading and the grammer. I found this to help complete what I was learning with Pimsleur.

If you have to choose only one.. go with Pimsleur. You will be able to have conversations very quickly.

If you have had no exposure to german, the best bet would be to purchase the Pimsleur approach program. It's a little pricy- I spent $100 on basic Romanian, but I went from not even knowing how to say "hi" to being able to carry on a simple conversation. And that was just the first level. Plus, there's a 30-day garantee, so it's really worth the money if you want to learn. Listen to the lessons every day and speak out loud, and you'll be learning in no time. Also, believe it or not, I'm sure there's german speakers around you. We live in such a huge melting pot here in the states. It may take a while to find them, but once you find some german speaking friends and really force yourself to speak (even if you feel stupid or silly) you'll really get the hang of it. I can speak/understand spanish, a little romanian, and a tiny bit of french and italian. All it takes is a lot of listening and talking, practice, and patience.

I've heard Rosetta Stone is a good site (see http://www.rosettastone.com ), but I've never used it myself because I've been learning German mostly from books and exposure to German pop music. Another web site, which I use more as a series of resources, is http://german.about.com .

Depends..do you want to pay? Many sites will givea few introductory courses for free, but then youwill have to pay to continue.
I
f you are looking for free, try your library. they often have cd courses you can borrow.

If you want to spend some dough, go to rossettastone.com..they are somewhat pricey but the program is awesome.
