If it harm none, do what thou will. Are you sure it won't hurt you to know you weren't being honest though? Is there a way you can be honest without being hurtful? Will the truth finally come out and then you'll be hurt because other's are mad at you for lying? Search your heart and see how you feel about these questions, and then do what you feel is right.

I'd say that to lie to protect someone in a particular situation could be considered harmless, though only if that situation is examined in a vacuum.

Thing is, life isn't lived in a vacuum. With respect to our actions, we all have tendencies, acting on those tendencies (lying) leads to habituation and the establishment of a pattern of behavior (more lying). This is a slippery slope, and the worst part is that unless you're paying REALLY close attention, you won't even realize that you're heading down that road.

Sometimes you can avoid answering the question. Sometimes you can change the subject. Sometimes you can just remain silent. Understandably, this isn't always the case.

So go ahead and lie if you must. But be honest with yourself and understand that what you've done isn't right. Try really hard not to do it again, otherwise it will become a part of your normal behavior, and you will have become a liar without even realizing it.

Tread carefully.

It really depends on the situation. if it is a life or death situation by all means. but if this is just to stick up for someone who did something really bad... like against the law then it is wrong. If you really care about this person find out how it would be best for that person in the long run. and lieing turns into more and more lieing!! and that can be bad in the long run!! you gotta really look at the whole picture.

Lie is wrong in all cases. If we truly loved other people, we could choose to nobly sacrify our life for them.
Lie is doing greatest harm in the world, because men are suspecting each other everywhere; even wife and husband, father and son, closest friends cannot trust each other anymore.
It is not easy at all to apply this divine lesson, because sometimes it requires from us the great courage to sacrify honor, property, or even our own life.
Yes, love is difficult to understand; divine love is a greater mystery. We have to meditate daily to understand the divine wisdom in prescribing religious laws.

If man decided to stop telling lies today, the world would immediately enjoy great peace.

Depends on what you are protecting them from! There are "little white lies" that don't really harm anyone, just protect someone from embarrassment. But if you are protecting someone from the consequences of an illegal, immoral or hurtful action, then you are doing them no real favor by allowing them to escape taking responsibility for their own actions.

Why lie if it doesn't harm anyone? What's the point? If you're going to lie, at least do some damage.

A lie is a lie just like stealing is stealing. It doesnt matter if I open your wallet and take 1$ or 100$ I still stole something from you. When you enter into "human" classification of things--we can slide into all forms of justification....
