Great question!

I went to truck driving school many years ago, and it was an excellent experience. I am still involved today with many aspects of trucking and truck driver training. The key is to find a good school. As with many types of businesses, there are good CDL training schools as well as bad ones.

The most important thing to look into is the quality of the training, which really comes down to how much time you actually get to drive the truck with an instructor training you. As you can imagine, driving an 80,000 lb. rig can be dangerous, and it takes a lot of practice. So make sure that the school tells you exactly how much driving time you'll get.

Also, many schools put 3-5 students in a truck; one drives, the others observe (but schools often count the "observation time" as time spent "behind the wheel" -- that's deceptive). Don't go there. You learn to drive by driving, not by watching other students drive. Look for a school like SAGE Tech, which guarantees all training to be one-on-one. Plus they have an exellent reputation, so their job placement is terrific nationwide.

There is also a great site all about CDL training. See the link below.

One other note: another answer recommended "paid" training by a carrier like Schneider. My advice is stay away. Some people think it is free, but you have to sign a contract agreeing to work for the carrier that paid for the training. The bottom line is they give you enough training to be dangerous on the road. Then they run you hard so they can make money off of you. Ain't nothin' for free. The basic deal is you get trained with no money down, but you are then a slave for a year. And they WILL get their money back one way or another . Either by low pay or if you leave they come after you for the costs of training (you have to agree to that in the contract).

But generally, trucking is a good living and if your smart you can make good money.

Good luck.

I went to a private truck driving school (odd sounding right?) and it was an experience. Are you thinking of doing so? It is a great job if you love to work for 10-15 hours a day and you don't mind being away from home.
I passed the tests and drove for a long time. The tests can be difficult if you don't study and practice. I hope you do well and get a great job, best of luck to you.
Remember keep the shiny side up.lol.

I can't answer all your questions, but yes, I know someone who went to truck driving school. I don't know which one. Yes, he passed, and became a truck driver and a damn good one, too. Because he couldn't afford his own rig, he worked for some fly-by-night outfit. Last I heard, he had lost his license because of his drinking and drugging.....obviously, not the schools' fault.

better to call a company that trains
save the money and sign a contract to work
one such company is schneider national
800-44-pride

they will send you an application in the mail to fill out and as long as you have a clean record free of felonies and DWI's you are set
enjoy, learn, get paid and you are on your way

Back in 1990, I went to National Tractor Trailer School (NTTS), in Liverpool, New York. Got my license, but never got a driving job.
