This is my first question ever and I've enjoyed reading other peoples questions and responses. After 10 years without a dog, basically because I know how much time they need and consume I haven't felt like I could give them what they needed until now. I want a dog that I'm able to run with and I do a lot of hiking/outdoor activites on the weekends and I want a dog that will be able to join me on such adventures. I have had several different breeds in my life and have some pretty good experience training dogs but will probably read another book or two and maybe even enroll in an obedience class. I can come home from work during lunch to take the dog out around noon and will then return around 5 to go for an evening run. Is this enough activity for a JRT or will I be boring him? Thank you in advance.

Jack Russells are very hyper active dogs. BUt they also like their alone time. Basically as long as you take the dog out once day for atleast a walk they are usually fine. HAve toys at home the dog that he can play with when you dont have the time to play with him. Some Jack Russells actually like to go swimming. I have a jack russell my self at home. So if you want know more go ahead and email me.

I'm not an expert on JRTs (except where I used to work my boss had 4 she brought in every day).
You sound like one of those people who would actually be suited to one. If you enjoy a high energy level dog, they may be for you. They are a smart dog, and can be good workers if you know how to motivate them. JRTs do very well in agility. You do need a sense of humor to train them, they are not "robot dogs" like some breeds. However it is extremely unlikely that they would be reliable off-leash; they have a strong prey drive and will take off after whatever catches their eye. They can be stubborn, although they love you they like to please themselves. They can be noisy.

Good luck in your search. Please find a reputable breeder who cares about their dogs and their breed, not someone who is breeding for money or so Fluffy can be fulfiled or something like that. Take your time and do your research, hopefully you will have your dog for 15 or more years, so it's worth it to spend a little extra time now and get the best dog for you.

I'm sure if you have already had experience with dogs then you will already know this, but I'll say it just in case:

You will have to start training your dog for hiking slowly, by 1/2 mile, to a mile, etc etc. You can't just get a dog and expect it to go hiking for miles.

Also, as long as you crate train your dog and give it toys and a treat filled Kong, that should be enough activity for a Jack Russell.
Just know that they are very hyper and some can bark a lot.

Good luck!

If i'm correct JRT love to exercise. The need one of the most love. Unlike retrievers they're happy just when u run with them alot. But JRT need more love and excercise. U must also feed after 6-8 hours. or just 3 meals a day. If u do get a JRT u must run with it and not be out very often. Because JRT will get very lonely. JRT is a dog who likes to be around others.

JRTs are wonderful, very energetic dogs and exceptionally smart. I have had one for 7 years now and she is just great! Her energy level is astounding! As long as you give it enough attention and a high level of activity when you do get home, it should manage well on its own. I never had any problems-just do the usual puppy proofing (they love to chew and tear things up when bored) and have lots of toys to keep it busy, it should be fine. Good luck!!

AKC.org has a description of each breed. Each breed generally has it's own website with helpful information from people who have either owned that breed for a long period of time or are actual breeders. They will clue you into activity levels, common health problems associated with the breed and the like.

I do know Jack Russells are highly active and can sometimes be vicious. Training is a must for this breed. Good Luck on whatever pet you decide on.

A Jack Russell would be perfect for you. Just be careful you don;t get the toy variety. JRT's are good sturdy, spunky little dogs that really enjoy outdoor actiities, and they are excellent companion dogs.

A jack russell would be good but you should also look into a golden retriever because that could be another option.
