The chapters are collected in the Holy Qur'an by size, not chronologically. The first chapter is Al-Fatiha( The one who opens), and the second chapter is Al-Bakharah( in translation, The Cow)
It has not, however, been used as a title to indicate the subject of the Surah. It will, therefore, be as wrong to translate the name Al-Baqarah into "The Cow" or "The Heifer" as to translate any English name, say Baker, Rice, Wolf etc., into their equivalents in other languages or vice versa, because this would imply that the Surah dealt with the subject of "The Cow". Many more Surahs of the Quran have been named in the same way because no comprehensive words exist in Arabic (in spite of its richness) to denote the wide scope of the subject discussed in them. As a matter of fact all human languages suffer from the same limitation.
Sequence
Though it is a Madani Surah, it follows naturally a Makki Surah Al- Fatihah, which ended with the prayer :"Show us the straight way". It begins with the answer to that prayer, "This is the Book (that) . . . is guidance. . ."
The greater part of Al-Baqarah was revealed during the first two years of the Holy Prophet's life at Al-Madinah. The smaller part which was revealed at a later period has been included in this Surah because its contents are closely related to those dealt with in this Surah. For instance, the verses prohibiting interest were revealed during the last period of the Holy prophet's life but have been inserted in this Surah. For the same reason, the last verses (284-286) of this Surah which were revealed at Makkah before the migration of the Holy Prophet to AI-Madinah have also been included in it.
By the way, Muhammad(Peace be upon Him) used to retire in the cave of Hira, near Mekkah, Where He was taught by Gabriel Angel(who was taught by God).He memorised the Holy Qur'an, and recited it to companions, who wrote it down on pieces of leather, and stone. Those who didn't know how to write were memorising the Holy Chapters. After a battle between mu'mins(those who accepted the Qur'an) and muttefiqs(the unbelievers), the number of those who memorised the Holy Qur'an rapidly decrease, and was decided that The Holy Qur'an must be written down, in order not to dissapear. The Chapters, Who were written on pieces of rock and leather, were gathered, and structured by size, and up until today The Holy Qur'an is unchanged, even after 14 centuries...

Muhammad was an Illiterate who couldnt write. He recited what Allah revealed to Him to the muslims and they memorized it and the ones that could read and write wrote it down. and also Allah has protected the Quran from corruption and changes. and about the second chapter, the Quran was revealed in a way where some verses of a chapter were revealed later and some chapters came all all at once and Allah would send Gabriel down to teach Muhammad the correct order of verses and chapters of the Quran

The fact is that THE HOLY QURAAN IS NOT AND COULDNT BE WRITTEN BY A HUMAN BEING.
If it was written by Muhammad PBUH , then how this illiterate person wrote it in this manner without any mistakes or any contradictions?
How could Muhammad PBUH knew the scientific facts included in The holy QURAAN thosands of years before their discovry??
Please , just for your sake and for mine, read about islam even considering your journey to discover it as a mean to gain culture.
BUT look for the right , fair and clear sources and not the misleading ones.
May ALLLAH guide and help us all.

check your fake sources next time you wanna criticize Islam and the Prophet (pbuh) just so we dont laugh at you!!but it's OK i know where you're coming from!!!
we never said that the Prophet (pbuh) wrote the holy Quran. and it was Allah/God in his own words that said that the Quran will never be altered or corrupted. dont beat on a dead horse, because you won't make a change.
the Quran hasn't been changed even one verse ever since it was revealed though many many attempts.
go on with your attempts and you will never succeed i guarantee you that. you or any body else.
peace be with you.

You are correct that the Qu'ran is written by Muhammad...and therefore questionable.
Actually, he was a very vicious man...not only to those that didn't believe...but also to his wives.
Besides, any man that would take a nine (9) year old as a wife and consummate that marriage...has issues.
I don't think I could ever trust someone that couldn't be trusted with earthly issues to also be trusted with Spiritual / Heavenly issues.
I will give him this...he knew how to draw men into his religion...the 72 virgin bit was a good marketing ploy.

Do u believe God spoke directly to Moses and they give him in a stone the 10 commandments???
This is one of the most importants beliefs for jews, christians and for muslims too.
In the case of Mohammed, Allah (swt) didnt spoke to him directly becoz it was Gabriel the arcangel who did...
That is the only difference, if u doubt of Muhammad then u should doubt of Moses...

The suras weren't arranged in the chronological order that they were 'received'.
All religions believe that their holy book is 'divine scripture'. They are all mistaken.
