I'm an atheist and former Christian.
Let me first say that not all atheists think that. The vocal atheists that give you a hard time are not really atheists. They are people who really believe in God but are rebelling. That's why they fight you with the zeal of a religious zealot. That's because they have merely replaced one belief system with another. They have adopted atheism as their new religion and they are trying to make a convert of you.
A real atheist (like me) has the freedom to be kind, caring, and polite, and to listen to and respect the beliefs of others. True atheists merely look at religion as folly, usually harmless folly, and we aren't threatened by it. It's not that we believe God doesn't exist. God doesn't exist. Why should it bother us, then what people believe, then? They may as well believe in fairies. We're merely amused. You believe what you want, and I don't even expect you to follow it well. It wouldn't even make any sense for me to care if you did or didn't.

The first thing that someone should be considering is whether the idea of sin is actually real.

If God is supposed to be perfect how could She have made anything or anyone that wasn't perfect.
Think about it. The idea of sin assumes certain things about God that seem highly unlikely.

First it assumes a God who is too incompetent to organize a simple educational field excursion and figure out a way to get all of the students home safely.

How likely is this that God would not be smart enough to come up with a plan for our salvation that is going to work?

It also assumes that God must have created us imperfect if we are sinners.

One might assume that God would be able to create someone perfect each and every time if he chose to. Assuming God is capable of this, then it follows logically that we must be perfect creations if we are actually creations of this perfect God.

Unless of course you are saying that God chose to create us imperfect.

If God created us imperfect then anything that may go wrong is Gods fault, not ours. This seems a bit illogical at best so I think that we need to assume that What God creates would have to be perfect.

If this is the case and Gods creations are perfect, then nothing that we can do could change what God created perfect and make it imperfect unless we think that we are more powerful than God is.

How likely is it that we the creation could be more powerful than the creator. I personally find this idea somewhat amusing, and a bit absurd.

Religion tells us that God is perfect. If this is true then it could hardly be logically for Gods creations to be considered to be anything less than perfect.

If this is the case then Nothing that we can ever do could possibly change this perfection that God willed, unless we were so powerful that our choices could override and change the will of God.

How likely is that????

Think about it.

The idea of sin is simple nonsense; a lie made up about God by religion.

If a Christian follows their Bible then i expect them to do lots of wrong. It's a good thing 99.9% of Christians don't follow their Bible...there was a time when they did..it was called the Dark Ages.

It matters not one bit to me how a Christian acts in regards to my atheism anyways..it matters to me what is true. And i am 100% certain that Christianity is not true as reported in the Bible.

There is no such thing as sin.

"The very concept of sin comes from the bible. Christianity offers to solve a problem of its own making! Would you be thankful to a person who cut you with a knife in order to sell you a bandage?" - Dan Barker.

And not all atheists think the same thing about anything. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in deitys and that is all we have in common with all other atheists.

So in other words, you are saying two things.

1. Christians are just as prone to committing violent and evil deeds as non-Christians.

2. Christians are forgiven for their crimes and will go to heaven, while non-Christians will not. Presumably, this is simply because Christians believe in Jesus.

I totally agree with point 1, but point 2 would never be allowed by a truly benevolent deity. Please stop worshiping such an evil god.

I'll tell you why - Christians in general (I wont lump them all into this group) are always telling everybody else what they should be doing. They tell us we cannot see a breast on TV, they tell us we should not gamble, look at porn, drink or smoke. They go on and on about what WE should not be doing.

So, when the very people who are telling us on a regular basis what we cannot/should not do go out and do that very thing, why do you act surprised when everybody else comes down so hard on them?

I believe that living in America gives other people the right to practice whatever religion (or no religion) they want, as long as they are not advocating the death and destruction of others. Instead of worrying about the effects of seeing a breast on TV is going to have on my mind, worry about yourself, and your congregation.

It is due to the fact that many people who label themselves as Christians tend to look down their noses at people not like themselves. These Christians are very weak minded and small so they mask their insecurities and fear of reality with mental rhetoric and labeling.

The fact is that atheists, like myself, don't think you are perfect. We pity people like this that are so caught up in their mental dilemmas and fear-driven existences that they cannot see reality. This is what Plato was referring to in his Cave narrative. Once you have seen that the masses are watching shadows you are not interested in shadows and want to get out of the Cave. The Christians you reference not only like the shadows, they mock others for not thinking the shadows are reality.

I don't understand that either because I am a christian and I get myself in situation's that I should not get myself into and sometimes it is someone does something to me so someone else may sin against you being a christian does not mean we perfect we one of God children's and he forgives us and protects us.

Because I live by a code of ethics that I decided were important to me. If I break that code I pay for it now. My reward is in knowing I've been true to myself. I won't live forever, wouldn't want to anyway. Just living life on my terms is enough of a reward.

forenote: use of "you" isnt directed at you, just anyone not me.

we (atheists) get mad because most religious freaks are constantly trying to force their views down our throats and then go and judge us and put stereotypes on us like "we're damned" or "heathens". i'm atheist, so i dont believe i'm damned, and no matter what you tell me, i wont believe it. i was never raised religious but i am still entitled to my views. but i sure as hell think that if you are a christian then you'd better fully believe what you're trying to preach to me and remember that you have no right to judge me, thats for your god to do
