By the time he went into the desert he had already done miracles so he either knew he was divine or very lucky.

this temptation is like saying if you work for me you can have all the money in your wallet. How long would you have to spend in the desert to fall for that and your a human.

Please, please...do not try to inject sanity into this section of Yahoo...it just makes no sense to do this on a daily basis.

You are wrestling. This is good.
a) At that time, satan ruled/controlled the world because of sin. Jesus did not own any of it because sin is external to the holy.
b) Being the Son of God sounds "heavenly", but it is actually ordinary. As Jesus reminded the people, Scripture states we are all Sons/Daughters of God. Humanity of God would be very tempted by the 3 queries, just as Eve had been.
c) Notice the real kick in the temptation is with the "if" clause: "IF you are...." Eve did not believe she was such a being and reached for the apple/gold ring to be like God. Satan was messing with Jesus mind in the same way. The temptation is in the IF YOU ARE clause and the world/bread/steeple is just a tab of frosting, like the apple, to disquise the issue.
d) I'm not sure of the miracle before temptation bit. Where are you at?
e) In Mark, most likely the earliest Gospel written, the book winds about the key question: WHO IS THIS? As you read Jesus' words the answer unfolds: The Son of Man.
We are all sons/daughters of God, which is one reason why God cares so much for us. We all carry God's breath/Spirit.
It took a SON OF MAN, an in-carnate / in-flesh one of us, to restore the full relationship of God to Human.

But Jesus' kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36). The devil was tempting Him with earthly kingdoms, when in fact Jesus was and is the King of something far better.
Later on, he actually made his escape when he realized that there were those who wanted to make Him an earthly king (John 6:14-15).
See, the devil wants to tempt the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life (Genesis 3:6; Luke 4:1-13; 1 John 2:16), and thereby get us to settle for less than God's best for us.
And notice how Jesus resisted: by using Scripture. He actually lived not on bread alone, but by every word that proceeded from the mouth of the Father. He worshiped the Father and served Him only. He did not put Him to the test, but rather kept within the bounds set by His Father. This is what enabled Him to be tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15).
Jesus did not receive that crown of glory until after He had made Himself nothing and humbled Himself to death - even death on a cross! Therefore, it is written, God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at Jesus' name every knee should bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of the Father (See Philippians 2:6-11).
He was declared with power to be the Son of God by the Holy Spirit - in His miraculous conception (Luke 1:35), in His baptism (Luke 3:21-22), and above all, in His resurrection (Romans 1:1-4). The latter in particular was 'the proof of the pudding'.

Jesus was tempted just as all men were tempted.
Satan might have suspected that Jesus was the Messiah, but if he knew for sure, he would have never bothered tempting him, or engineering his death.
At the time Jesus was tempted, Satan actually posessed dominion over all the earth, so he could have given it to Jesus (not that he would have). Dominion over the earth is what Satan obtained from Adam, when Adam sinned.
In the end, Satan was totally fooled by the whole process, and caused his own demise.
And Jesus didn't even stay dead!

Yes, but remember that Jesus Christ had been living a life of relative powerlessness - in effect, His mortal life was not too different from any other mortal man. Exhaustion after fasting such a long period of time would have turned the head of anyone else as well. It's the same temptation for all of us - but magnified in Jesus' case. Are we satisfied with earthly power, or are we willing to continue to submit to the commandments and God's will for us - with the promise of eternal glory and a restoration to all that we knew before? It was the same question Jesus had to answer. Although He knew who He was, He still had free agency to turn away from the past and choose the opposite side. In our own moments of exhaustion or doubt, we also have a tendency to want an "easy" way out of trials.

Satan became prince of the earth when Adam sinned and ate the forbidden fruit. Yes, Jesus was (and is) the Son of God, but the temptation was to rule over the earth without having to face death on the cross. Bowing to Satan would be the easy way out. It was a temptation, and we face similar temptations as well. It's much easier, rather than follow God's path- which may be difficult at times, to follow our own paths. To take the easy way out.

I thought that "son of God" was a symbol (a way to tell things that we don't conceive easily). Because he also told that we were "brothers", so in a certain way we are all sons of God. No ?
About temptation... I guess that the story "Jesus vs devil" is another symbol.

When humans fell we turned over the dominion of the earth that God gave Adam and Eve over to Satan. Although God is in charge of everything, right now Satan has a temporary control of the earth (why Paul tells us to be "in the world but not of it." Satan, of course, thinks that this means that he won. He is very arrogant and, although he's read the Bible and knows that God wins in the end, he thinks that he still has a fighting chance. So Satan was trying to get Jesus to take the easy way. "Bow down before me and I'll give you all these souls. You won't have to die on the cross to get them because I'll just give them to you." Of course Satan is a lier and never would have given Jesus anything.

yes Jesus knew all things were his - however He also knew He would have to suffer unimaginable trials and tribulations, be cursed and spat on and suffer an excruciating death. that was the temptation - the devil would give Him everything with only one bow.

The test Jesus went through was so he could actually know what we go through so we can't say he doesn't know what its like because he does he's been tested by the Devil and he wasn't going to give in.

True, but after fasting for 40 days, Jesus was in an extremely weakened condition, even near death. He would have been far more subject to make irrational decisions in such a state of weakness.
