My husbands brother recently got married and his wife has a girl who's about to turn 9. I don't know anything about her really, and I have asked the mom what she likes, but she doesn't really tell me much.. Does anyone know something general that preteen girls like?

I would buy her a Cabbage Patch Kid. They are classics that were enjoyed by my generation and are still being enjoyed by today's generation as well. And today they even make all different types (twin babies, first step kids, etc.). One that resembles her would be a thoughtful idea.

Get her some craft supplies and a box to organize them, like a plastic box with different little areas to separate items. Things like beads, string, clasps, pipe cleaners, rubber stamps, yarn, felt, cardboard pieces (like for making little picture frames), etc. Girls that age love to make things, especially things they can share with their friends. Your gift will be original and fun for her.

When I was nine, I loved stuffed animals. Perhaps you could buy her a stuffed cat or something.
