Drama has existed since the beginning of Humanity!
But it's generally acknowledged to have started with the Greeks. There were theatrical dances and ceremonies prior to the Greeks, but they really started Drama as we know it.

The Western tradition of theatre is credited to ancient Greece. However, it may have gone on--in a much less structured manner--since the dawn of human communication.
Run a google search or go to the library and look for books on Aristotle and Sophocles. Read the Oedipus series, as they are a good basis for Greek theatre. Lysistrata is good for comedy.
