The Old Covenant example of the concept is forshadowed in the picture of Moses lifting up the serpent when the Israelites in the wilderness had been bitten by a plague of them. When they looked upon the serpent which Moses hung on a tree, they were instantly healed, looking to the future, when Messiah Yeshua would one day hang upon the cross of Calvary.(John 3:14)

Perhaps you are also thinking of the passage in Isaiah 53:5 which says, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him."

Lastly, maybe you are referring to Galatians 3:13 which says,
"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: For it is written, 'Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree".
