Oxygen (O2) is exchanged for carbon dioxide(CO2) at very small parts of the lung called aveoli. It attaches itself to something called hemoglobin or hem(aka. iron and it gives the red color to the blood) which is attached to red blood cells. The heart moves the blood through the body and as the body needs O2 it is passed off to the skin and muscles by capillaries and CO2 is picked up by the red blood cells and carried back to the lungs for exhalation.
