Yes they are and it gets its name from the Hawaiian language which is polynesian in its roots. The bigeye and yellowfin are so similar in look/taste that they are both called AHI. There are many different species of tuna with the most common being Yellowfin, Bluefin, Skipjack, Albacore, and Blackfin. The skipjack is not normally considered to be great tablefare, but when prepared correctly is not that bad. The Hawaiians call the skipjack AKU.
