does effexor cause mania if taken with lithium?

I'm guessing not, but both those drugs are taken for bi-polar, maybe you haven't been taking them long enough. Most psych meds take 2-4 weeks for any effect, and min 6 weeks for full effect.

Also when ANY doc prescribes lithium I always recomend a second opinion. You doctor may be totally right. I would just recomned getting a second opnion because that drug is such a heavy hitter, and the side effects are so strong.

Good Luck.

hay am a med student no it should not cause mania your depression can cause mania

Effexor does not interact with Lithium or Valium. However, you should consult your doctor before combining Effexor with other drugs that affect the central nervous system, including narcotic painkillers, sleep aids, tranquilizers, antipsychotic medicines such as Haldol, and other antidepressants such as Tofranil

hope this helps from lisa
