woman goes into a graveyard with a bunch of flowers. there are 4 graves & a magic pool in the graveyard. The magic pool doubles the quantity of anything dipped into it. The woman places a number of flowers on the 1st grave, dips the remainder in the pool so that they double, places the same number of flowers on the 2nd grave as the 1st, dips the remainder where they double again, places the same number on the 3rd grave as are on graves 1 & 2, dips the remainder again, and she's left with the exact number of flowers that are on the other 3 graves. She places these on the 4th grave & walks out empty handed. All 4 graves have the same amount of flowers on them. The question is, how many flowers did she take to the graveyard? And how many flowersare on each grave??

good one. and the 'lowest' possible answer is 15 flowers, 8 on each grave. follow the algebra above because i'm not gonna do it again.
The point is, there are an infinite number of answers just by multiplying the 15 and 8 by any other number.

So, the puzzle would work if she took 30 flowers (15*2) and put 16 on each grave (8*2), or took 45 flowers (15*3) and placed 24 on each grave (8*3). Leaving an infinite number of possibilities, until you start asking just how many flowers this woman can actually carry.

The woman took a bunch of flowers to the graveyard and placed a number of them on each grave.. Duh?

I don't care of the number of units because the question is not asking it so..

she goes in with 4 ,places 2 on the first ,dips them then has 4 again, places 2 on the 2nd, dips them again ,places 2 on the 3rd ,the remaining 2 are put onto the last grave as she had no need to dip them anymore .must be worth the 10 points for the correct answer !

Algebra! This takes me back.
Say she arrives at the graveyard with a total number of flowers T
and places a number of flowers N on the first grave.
She has T-N flowers remaining and doubles these in the magic pool to give her 2(T-N) or 2T-2N flowers.
Of these she takes another N and puts them on the second grave, leaving her with 2T-2N-N or 2T-3N flowers.
She doubles these in the pool to get 2(2T-3N) or 4T-6N flowers and once again removes N flowers to put on the third grave.
Now she has 4T-6N-N flowers, or 4T-7N and she dips and doubles these a third time to give her 2(4T-7N) or 8T-14N flowers.
She puts all of these on the fourth grave.
If each grave has the same number of flowers then 8T-14N must equal N. If N = 8T - 14N then 15N = 8T and T = 15N/8.

She arrives with a bunch of 15 flowers and abracadabra places 8 flowers on each grave.
I'd say she was a lucky lady to have the magic pool, if it wasn't that she had the graves to tend.
