linux problem?

hi there i have a laptop that i just installed ubuntu linux but i cannot put
the laptop to sleep because when i wake it up the screen wont turn on and i have to shut it down normally what i have to do to repair that
and turning the laptop umproperly can cause problems at least one time if yes which ones thanks
