Usually you get a promise ring sometime in your teens - like maybe 14 or 15 and it symbolizes that you are going to wait until you are married to have sex.

These are often -- though not exclusively by any means -- used with the True Love Waits program. You can Google True Love Waits to find their website. I think (just a guess) that the purity rings originated with this movement. They may be able to recommend an age and give you more details.

A promise ring is given to a girl, from her boyfriend with the intention of marriage (later down the road).

A purity ring is a ring that you would wear on your left ring finger to signify purity until marriage.

They are two different rings.

I agree with JCLOVESME.
A promise ring is totally different from a purity ring..My daughter is 18 and has both of them.

It is a ring that is either presented you by your parents or you get for yourself. It works just like tying string around your finger. It is there to remind you of your vows to remain sexually pure until marriage. You "should" get one when you have made this commitment to the Lord. There is no specific age for it. Typically this happens between 12 and 18.

I wear a promise ring on my left ring finger as a symbol, a promise if you will, to God, myself, my friends and family, and my future husband, that I will stay pure- as a spotless bride, for my wedding day.

I wanted to buy one for my daughters, and then decided not to. Its their decision to want one or not, and to respect its meaning and values.
Its a promise to keep pure until your wedding day. Then you take it off your finger and give it to your husband as a gift. Saying I saved myself for you. My girls ended up each buying themselves one, one was 16 and the other girl was age 17.

you make a promise to stay together and "be with no other", if you truly love each other and will most likely stay together i think it would be a good idea.
