Hymns written by Protestants and Mormons are in our hymn book. I believe there is some kind of list of instruments which are considered "appropriate" for church meetings. They include but are not limited to: organ, piano, violin and string instruments, guitar (acoustic, not electric), woodwinds, chimes, triangle, harp. The most common would be piano and organ. People can sing with or without accompaniment, with live or recorded music. Arrangements of songs by Michael McLean and Janice Kapp Perry are also popular. Personally, I like them but also Amy Grant and Claudina Brinn (Pentecostal singer from Puerto Rico). Outside of church a variety of music is acceptable. Since I studied a little bit of music therapy, I have learned that organ and harp music along with piano and flute are favored for music which is considered 'spiritual' or which heals the spirit. However, I think happy music of all kinds can do wonders for your spirit.

Catholic church plays SLOW SAD music ALL THE TIME!!

But I have been to mass with more contemporary music. The classic catholic mass includes choir, organ and sometimes other instruments, like trumpets, stings. Sometimes it is just organ, just piano and vocals from the congregation. Contemporary masses have had guitar, bass, drums, etc and played more upbeat music.

We attend two Catholic churches, one is totally serious with organ music and the other is more like folk music with one person playing a guitar. I favor the guitar music.

at my church we always sing, which is good, because i think that by singing, you get to partcipate more than just sitting and listening to scripture. and the music is lively too so you won't fall asleep.
