Depends on the state. In Alabama if you buy from and individual or an auction the DMV collects the sales tax (state, county, and city). Also you will pay advorlem from the time u register to when u renew.
Now if u buy from a dealership they usually collect the sales tax. If not the DMV will. Also if the car is brand new u have the option to transfer ur old tag (if u have one from the vehicle u traded in or sold before u bought the new car). In this case it will only be $1.50 for the purchase. The advorlem and everything will be collected when u renew. If the car u purchased from the dealership is a used car they still should collect the sales tax. If not the DMV will. On a used car u also pay the advorlem from time of registering to when u renew. Also on used cars purchased by dealership/individual DMV looks up to see if its last tag was from outta state, in the county, or different county in the state. If it is out of state and bought from a dealership... the dealership can provide a dealers affidavit to waive taxes.
**You can transfer ur tag also on used cars as well as new cars. Just same thing goes... must have traded in the car or sold it before u bought the brand new/used car. If no tag just pay the tag price for a brand new car and tag price plus taxes they collect on a used car.
Ok I think that about sums it up.. if I left out anything sry. I hope this is helpful. Try the link below and find the state u are going to register the car in or contact the DMV for more information.

It all depends on what state you live in. You might want to add that detail to your question to get more accurate answers.
I live in Delaware and it costs $20 to register your vehicle for 1 year and you may only register your car for 1 or 2 years. Unless you have a brand new car. In that case, you can register your car for up to 5 years.

Totally depends upon where you are, as well as whether it's a new registration or a renewal.
