Both Dems and Reps both flip on issues all the time....Their goal is to win elections and they are going to take sides that they think will do that. Usually the opposite of the other....but both sides switch points of view and say different things. Does anyone else see that. It is our job as voters to look at both sides and use what limited information we have to make a decision...not take a side and then find info to support....agree or disagree? be honest and don't just defend your party because its what you are suppose to do...

Aside from the already mentioned reasons of wanting votes, there are times when changing ones opinion is a demonstration of intelligence. Sometimes all of us, politicians included, maintain certain opinion regrading a given issue, then get more information which changes our minds. This is what thinking people do, and it can be a good thing. To hold a politician accountable for their stated position before the election is legitimate *most* of the time, but leaders who change their positions based on additional information should be comended for their ability to deduce and reason.

Because blind loyalty to a party, and blind opposition to the 'other' party, makes it easier for people to choose sides.

If they just follow the party line blindly, they never have to look at the issues, or think about making informed choices.

Think independently. Vote your conscience.
Or if that requires too much thought, trust us and vote Libertarian.

Because to acknowledge that is to acknowledge democracy is flawed - and to deny people the comfort of their absolutes. It is dangerous to criticise the system nowadays, as people believe "if you're not with us, you're against us". A statement that whilst being wholly untrue and oversimplifying the situation nevertheless sums up society.
