Whipworm is a parasite that lives in the large intestine. Humans can get whipworm, but it's easily diagnosed and treated.

It's transmitted through feces. So stay away from your dog's poo. If you have to scoop while you're walking him/her, use disposable latex gloves and throw the gloves away at the end of each walk.

Wash your hands thoroughly.

Your vet probably gave your dog some medicine. Once the treatment is complete, you can return to handling your dog (and its poo) normally.

It is possible for you and your family to get it...if you are playing in his stool. As long as you are careful and clean up any feces in the yard and wash your hands after any contact with his rear end you should be fine. If he goes to the bathroom on a cement surface I would bleach the area and scrub it clean to prevent any eggs from surviving. Whipworm can stay in the ground for a little while. Just remember no hand mouth contact if you or any one else has touched his feces.

Infection occurs through accidental ingestation of eggs and is more common in warmer areas. The eggs hatch in small intestine, then move into the wall of the small intestine and develop. Upon reaching adulthood, the thinner end (the front of the worm) burrows into the large intestine and the thicker end hangs into the lumen and mates with nearby worms. The females can grow to be 50 mm long. Neither the male nor the female has much of a visible tail past the anus.
