Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a psychiatric diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders in which the person experiences depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Persons suffering from the disorder are considered to be disabled. Cases of bipolar disorder are generally divided into two diagnostic categories, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, with Bipolar I cases generally being regarded as more acute. Left untreated, bipolar disorder can be a severely disabling condition, with a risk of death through suicide.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives.

Just google the term and you can read all about it. It is a psychiatric condition characterized by a swing in moods from depression to mania. It used to be called manic-depression. It is only treatable with medication. It runs in families and you can't cause it to happen to someone.

It usually causes a lot of social, and functional problems for the sufferer since during periods of mania, there are no rules for the person and they spend a lot, have sex a lot, and are ''high''. The depression can be immobilizing and deep.

It requires medical support, counselling support and medication.

Bi-Polar is the new term for what used to be called manic depression. It is a form of brain chemical inbalance. It does respond to both chemical intervention and therapy.

There are many types, but all of them carry the theme of extreme mood swings. Sure it's treatable, but with extreme cases, the patient considers the "cure" worse than the disease.
