I think they are just miserable people. If I have a problem with a product, I understand that the retail person didn't cause whatever bad thing happened (defective product, high price, not in stock, etc). I also understand that if you treat people nice, they are more likely to want help you than if you are yelling at them. Those screamers must have a really bad life, since the screaming does nothing to improve their service. They must get so use to poor service that they just go off the handle all over the place, which reinforces their expectation of poor service. Better to be happy.

I worked in retail this summer, and have experienced my share of rude and unfriendly people. I have also been one of these people before, which I am ashamed to say. Sometimes people are just having a bad day, and don't care to exchange pleasantries. Others are in a rush to get somewhere else and get very frustrated when they are held up for one reason or another. Money brings out some poor qualities in people as well. However, I have found that the majority of people are relatively understanding...but the select few (ok...few hundred) make a lasting impression.

I would guess because they are frustrated and don't know how to deal with it in a productive way. We have all dealt with the clerk that made us just want to pull our hair out, but we don't because we have manners and decency. I worked retail for 2 years and that was about all I could take. I remember wanting to just cry before going into work. I always try to be as polite as possible even if I am frustrated because I know that if I were in their shoes I would want to be treated as a human being rather than some kind of retail wage slave. I think a lot of people just need to take a deep breath and RELAX!

I used to work in several retail jobs when I was in college.
The customers are rude because they think retail people are lower than they are. Sometimes if they yell at you for no reason they are having a bad day and want to take it out on you. You are their target. I remember once I asked a rich man "can I help you sir?" and he threw a shirt in my face and said "yeah fold this".
People are assholes sometimes. Another time I helped a ***** for over an hour. She tried on 30 pairs of sneakers and just walked away leaving a mess WITHOUT saying "thanks" . I worked on commission. Then the next day she came back and told another employee she wanted to buy a pair of sneakers.

I mean I helped her for an hour and it took 20 minutes to put everything back and then she tells my co-worker standing next to me that she wants to purchase giving my co-worker the commission.
Some customer are rude. I don't understand what makes them behave this way. Like I said , it's probably because they are snobs and think that you don't deserve to breathe the same air as them. I hate those customers. I hope you get a nice customer next time.

Just do your job the best that you can.

Some people honestly think they can get what they want or get better service if they show "aggression" and a lot of times, they do!

Don't let that happen. Show professionalism and courtesy at all times. If the screamer is going too far, you do not have to be abused - call the manager and go on with your day.

I think people who do that are just rude and like to cause problems. When I worked retail I realized that a lot of people are just plain old mean and if they can dump their bad day on you they will do that.

i usedto work retail and im still in where i serve the public . i think they do their screaming because they know in order for you to keep your job you are suppose to not retailate back . you know thecustomer is ""always "" right . what person made that policy accepted in business must have gone out of business , the customer is never right when they chose to get verbal or physically violent . ---- well that is enough i will get off the soapbox now

People expect instant results and instant service these days- the product of a 24-hour, impatient society. It's unfortunate to say the least, but it's a growing fact of today's world. I can't stand the customers who stop to have a go at staff because it means the CUSTOMER who is doing the shouting is in fact causing the queue!

I worked in retail for years. For some reason, a lot of people feel they are superior to those in retail, restaurants, etc. I think they are like this because they are unhappy in their own lives, and have to crap all over others to feel good about themselves.

I have no idea. I hate this behavior. I can' t believe that people abuse service people. I don't think working in retail or in food service can be easy. I always try to be friendly or at least respectful.
