The current "best" is the Core 2 Extreme X6800. It is available today for about $1000US.

Right now the Core 2 Duo (also known as Conroe) blows away any other processor, including all the AMD's.

I put "best" in quotes because I assume you are talking about a PC and not a server or other specialized processor. In that case the dual core Opterons may be the current "best" for server applications.

There is no such thing as an Athlon FX 64 - it's the Athlon 64 FX-62 and the Core 2 Extreme kills that too.

When the new Nvidia 590 SLI motherboards are out (Intel Conroe supported SLI) the benckmarks will go even higher.

BTW - I am not for or against AMD or Intel. They both make good products. Right now, today, Intel has the "best" CPU. AMD will probably hit the market first with quad core, so then they will have the "best" for a few months.

I'd have to say the XEON dual-core or Opteron dual-core. But, for most of us it must be the Pentium D or AMD X2. For the money, I'd say AMD.

I would not waste any time on celerons or semprons. They are fine for business apps though.

the duo core 2 should be released in the spring. It would make much more sense to wait until it is released with Vista unless you desperately need a computer now.
