i am asuming that you're using ceramic tile. if so, you will need to either remove the old vinyl flooring (it will take some work, but it is possible to do) or if you really want to leave the old flooring on place, you will need to attach cement backerboard to the floor and then tile over that. if your subfloor is made of wood (if the room is on a second story it will be) then screwing the backerboard to the floor shouldn't be hard. I'm not sure though if you're on a cement subfloor. the backerboard (also called cement board) can be found in the tile section at home depot.

It is absolutely necessary to know if your new tile is vinyl, linolium or like a ceramic-type. You can lay vinyl over an old vinyl or linolium floor, but you have to strip if if you are going to lay down ceramic.

if your using ceramic tile i would pull up the vinyl. if you dont then it wont hurt a thing. trust me i have done it and it last for 15yr untill i changed it

i don't know much but i do know this thou you have to strip it take all the wax off. i wish i knew more.
