wow... a fan. chetco's the man...

BUT, I'm going to have to disagree with him.

The best thing to feed, as long as your dogs teeth can handle it, would be a kibble food. When a dog chews the kibble, the scraping action helps remove plaque and tartar. You don't get this with a canned or wet food, which is why "canned" dogs usually have smellier breath.

I would also recommend a dental treat, such as Greenies or Dentabone. Greenies is a good example of a dental treat that not only scrapes tartar when they chew, but has clorophyll, which helps the dogs digest the food better.

Remember 10 or 15 years ago, when breath-asure came out? Same thing, kind of. Clorophyll helps. Parsley too.

The best thing about Greenies is they're accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Check out the greenies site (below) for more info.

If you want to go natural, good ol' bones work great. They're nature's toothbrush for dogs, and they LOVE them. Make sure to get a slow cooked bone, so it doesn't splinter in the dog's mouth or insides. (check Nature's Variety for some of the best cooked bones out there...)

If you can, stick with kibble. Make sure you're feeding a top-tier food, such as Canidae or Nature's Variety, so you know that the dog's bad breath isn't caused by one of the food's ingredients (soy makes a dog have bad breath, and makes them pass gas a lot too).

Hope this info helps. Good luck!

I have to agree with bub and not chetco, even though chetco does give lots of good advice, this time i cannot agree with him either. For one, feeding a dog a soft diet all the time is not good for them, feeding a small bite size food would be good this way the small pieces can be chewed up easier. The lamb is a good idea if u can afford to buy it, unless u raise ur own sheep. I feed mine the raw diet, but they get their bones and do eat innova once in a while.http://www.seefido.com/html/dog_food_recipes.htm

I see that your poodle is 16 years old..so a soft diet is likley preferable.. it is hard to keep sweet breath on a soft diet..but, I will give you a good, easily digested diet for him..
.
this is a good hypo-allergenic diet, that is also used to fight cancer...but will be good for any dog..
A diet of lamb, rice and kelp...

Cook the white or brown rice with 3 cups of water per cup of rice, and cook until all is absorbed. Grind or chop the lamb (about 2 tablesppons per feeding for a toy breed) and feed it raw,or barely cooked.. mixed in the rice with a 1/2 teaspoon of sea kelp..You can add vegetables in season, including yams and peeled potatoes. Avoid tomatoes, corn, onions, cabbage,.. You can add or exchange lentils for the rice.
Your grocer will have kelp in the health supplement section, or your drug store, or healthfood store.

Most store bought meats have growth hormones, and antibiotics, given during the growing or 'finishing' feeding. but lamb is not fed that stuff.

The kelp makes a big difference.

If your dog doesn't like the rice, you can boil fresh fish (not farmed) and pour the broth over the rice.
Don't cook the kelp, but stir it in before serving..about 1/2 teaspoon per feeding...twice per day.
the above recipe will last for several days, so you don't have to cook daily, but most dogs prefer it warmed..

You can use lamb burger or fatty cuts..If the lamb is too lean, this diet might cause hard stools..you can add 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin, oat or rice bran, or olive oil if there is constipation.

Edit: Rather than switching food all at once, ease the poodle into the new diet..by cooking it up and adding it to his current diet in small amounts until the diet consists of the newer one..
