50 DME means you are at a distance of 50 Nautical Miles from the ground based navigation beacon you are using (VOR, ILS etc). DME just stands for Distance Measuring Equipment

50 DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) means you are 50 slant range nautical miles from whatever radio station is transmitted the signal. The key here is "slant range" - if you are 6000feet directly over the station, the DME will show you at a distance of 1nm from the station.
