First, try to replace your bad habit with a healthier one. When you find your hands traveling towards your mouth, stop yourself and pop in a lollipop, or better yet a raw carrot, instead. It will take some serious, conscious effort on your part to replace your bad habit, but you can do it if you really want to. If you don’t even realize you’re chewing on your nails, try wearing a rubber band on your wrist and giving it a little pop every time you find your fingers in your mouth. That will help bring your consciousness to your problem so that you can learn how to stop biting your nails.
Another thing that might help you learn to stop biting your nails is to make your hands look as pretty as possible so that you don’t want to mess them up. Splurge on a salon manicure so you get some pampering and care lavished on your poor, bitten nails. It only takes about a week or so to start seeing some growth and once you see some progress, you’ll be less likely to want to bite. But remember—in time of stress you’ll be tempted to go back to biting, no matter how pretty your nails so you need to find some other way to relieve your stress, like meditation, journaling, or exercise.

It's not a 'habit' if you can't quit. I tried painting on the bad-tasting stuff for nailbiters and thumbsuckers, and it didn't work. I wore acrylic nails for over 5 years, then went back to biting my nails bloody within minutes of taking them off after the 5+ years.
I took Zoloft for depression a few years ago, and noticed my nails were growing. Pharmacist said 'nailbiting is an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)' - so the Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SRI) I was taking interrupted the behavior. He said that Zoloft works really well on OCDs. Maybe it's not a 'habit' - maybe it's an OCD, and if you get SRI medication for it, it should stop.
I just decided that since it was something I don't have any control over, I shouldn't beat myself up over it. Way more important stuff out there than worrying about how pretty one's nails are. And too much guilt over stuff that is perfectly normal.

get that stuff that you put on your nails like nail polish. It tastes terrible and makes you aware that you are chewing. Keep using it for a long time. Put it on the skin around your nails too, any finger in the mouth has to be an unpleasant experience to stop this habit. It worked for me.

The only way I was able to quit was to get acrylic nails. I bit on them for a while, and continued to chew my cuticles for a while, but I kept getting them filled in as they grew and finally quit completely. If I don't have them on I still bite my nails.

I stopped biting mine a few years back when I got pregnant.
one reason is because the vitamins you take strengthen them and then I also started carrying a nail file with me and always used that instead of biting. It helps alot. Also if need try eating like sunflower seeds or something small that you always have on hand, stick them in your mouth instead of your fingers.

Get acrylic nails. They are too tough to bite. Or polish your nails with a base coat fast drying nail enamel EVERYDAY. Your nails won't fray and rip like they could while bare, which provokes you to bite off the snags.

You can buy non-toxic chemicals at your local convenience store to put on your nails that taste really bad. That way, you'll learn not to bite your nails. Nail polish and nail growth polish also work.
