That's a misconception that atheists don't believe in anything. The term atheist isn't even a general label for a group of people. The only unifying quality of atheism is a lack of belief that a god or gods exist. It is absolutely not a title that explains "our beliefs" quite the contrary... it's a title that explains what we don't believe.

I'm an atheist and i believe in living a positive life and helping others. I believe in respect for your fellow human being. I believe in honesty and loyalty. I believe in reason and knowledge. How is that not believing in anything... Just because we don't believe that there is a god doesn't mean we don't believe in anything.

Atheists believe there is no god. The word is used to define the difference between them and religious people. You have different terms for groups that believe different things so you can call them something. Those who believe in god and think of Jesus as their savior are called Christians. Those who believe in god and think of Mohammed as a prophet are called muslims. Those who don't believe there is a god god are called atheists. We always make terms to define and keep separate different things. The term "atheist" is no different.

They don't. It's the other people who insist on making up names and putting people into categories and labels.

Actually it's not true to say atheists don't believe in anything. They just disbelieve or deny the existence of God or gods. It's perfectly possible for them to believe in love, or psychotherapy, or the power of a good thin-crust pizza.

Because if they just say they don't believe in anything a Christian takes that as an invitation to convince them of Christianity. If they have a label Christians can hate them instead and are less likely to bother them.

What title? "Atheist" isn't a title, it's a label, and not one we chose. Atheism = without theism, that's just how it translates. Your definition of atheist is also incorrect.

Atheist: One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

athiest comes from greek, used to reffer to all who dont believe in the greek gods and who were outcast for their defiance of the gods and after the greek switch to latin it changed the meaning of atheist because the vast niumber of gos spread out wide they no longer coulddistinguish so no people consider in many circles outside of christianity called agnostics they claim to search for the truth their not opposed to God on the other hand man is spirit soul and bod we must satisfy our whole being.

my title is rational ethical hedonist...

atheist simply means without theism...

If we choose the privative meaning of "without," then "a-theism" will mean "without-theism" -- i.e., "without (or lacking) belief in a god or gods." This clearly supports the definition of atheism as the absence of theistic belief.
