If you are a US citizen you do not need a passport to go to Canada or Mexico, take a look at this site:

If you are flying into Mexico from the US you do need a passport. You do not need a passport to drive or walk across the border but technically you are supposed to stay within 100 miles of the border. Everyone should have a passport anyway, you never know when you will need or want to go somewhere on short notice.

When I fly in to Mexico City from the US I always need to show my passport on my way in and out.

The border patrol won't ask for your passport when you go into Canada or Mexico... but you will have to show it when re-entering the U.S. I've been to both Mexico and Canada, and this has always been the case.

Yeah they will ask you for it coming out but if you don't have it a DL or state ID will work if you look American. They will tell you to get a passport next time around. If you ask before you take your trip and run a little late on time they will tell you to bring a DL and birth certificate.
