Money my dear, money. daycare costs an arm and a leg and school is basically free and ends up simply being an overgrown free daycare anyway. If school was as expensive as daycare where the parents had to pay a couple of hundred dollars a week simply to have their kids in a class, the ratio would be more like the 1 to 6 you mention. Education levels would jump and improve also.

Because childcare tends to be for small children who need more attention paid to what they physically do. Where as in a classroom, they have learned to sit still and aren't all running over the school and class.

Smaller children need more attention and closer supervision. Kids in school should have been taught a little bit of responsibility and do not need as close of supervision. 1 to 18 is great. If they brought back corporal punishment into the schools they could save me a lot of money and go back up to 1 to 35.

because childcare implies little children, who need more individual attention to keep them safe, and they aren't sitting still at desks most of the time. Older children in classrooms should be able to control themselves, and are usually expected to sit still and pay attention to the teacher.

Also, in most states, the adult to child ratio for licensed child care is mandated by law.
The classroom teacher to child ratio may be more due to funding. Ideally, teaching should be on a one to one basis, but for practical reasons, it almost never is.

Good question - the middle school my son is supposed to go to was built to hold 1000 students max; they got 1800 this year. What kind of education can he get there? & then people wonder why kids are so dumb today . . . I am working on teaching as much at home & in our everyday lives as possible - history, social studies, current events, etc. He doesn't get any of that or he gets a very one-sided & biased lesson instead of the truth.

Because when you go to school, you no longer need your didies changed and one hopes your parent(s) actually taught you manners and some discipline on how to behave.
You should be expected to sit quietly, listen to and obey the teacher, and do your classwork in a respectful manner.
Thus you should not need to have a lower ratio.

Because infants and toddlers in daycare need more individual care. Kids in a classroom are assumed to be able to do some things for themselves.

have you ever tried watching a room full of 1 and 2 year olds? it's a nightmare. a 6 year old can be told to sit still and be quiet. 1 and 2 year olds can't.

Childcare employees get paid better than teachers, outfits can afford more. Also it's more likely a childcare center can lose a law suit.
