You're going to get so many different answers, proving that there ISN'T a "best" cat food, lol.
Just stay away from cheap foods, and expensive foods with crappy ingredients. Look for the words "byproducts" and "corn" in the ingredients....if they're there, avoid that food. Even Science Diet has a lot of that crap in it.
I'm switching my cats to Solid Gold. It's a holistic pet food. My brother and parents use the dog food for their dogs, and you wouldn't believe the difference it's made in all of them.
And no, mice aren't best. (I'm talking about field mice. They can carry parasites.)

Actually mice are the best cat food. Second best is a home-made raw meat diet (see. www.catinfo.com) Third is a premium cat food (Royal Canin mentioned here) that contains NO CORN. The best foods are made with rice, oats, tapioca etc. and a high percentage of meat protein (should be the first two ingredients on the bag)
CA Natural has a chicken and rice. Natural Balance has a venison and pea, Nature's Variety has a chicken and rice, etc.
Don't use just one food, I rotate around three different kinds for my cats. They also have a raw meat (with supplements) diet that I prepare for them.

Anything marketed by Purina. Their cat food is nutritional and has worked really well for me in the past several years. You just have to find out what you cat does and doesn't like (all cats are finicky eaters)!

Cats are picky, I have 3 of them and they all like different food so I suggest buying small bags of different ones and trying them all out. All of mine like Fancy Feast so I have them share a can in the morning and a can at night and the dry food is available to them all day.

There isn't "a" best cat food, but some are definitely better than others. A few are so good you could eat them yourself. Some are so bad they're really garbage.
Here, read up:

This site tells you what you should know about feline nutrition and how to select a good quality food. Aside from the information you need to make your choices, it provides information about some specific brands.

My friend works at a store that focuses on pet health. She swears by a raw food diet you can purchase, and I must admit her cats have been energetic and even more healthy looking ever since she got them on this.

Royal Canin has a range of foods tailored for age, health etc. Their customer service phone number is really helpful and their food isn't as expensive as IAMS.
