The Irish were getting away from the Brits. And the Germans from their own oppression and unsettled European politics.

The Irish because of the potato famine. The Germans because of the upper class control on the masses. They basically wanted their freedom. The landowners had a lot of control over peoples lives back then. Can you imagine it being so bad that you would give up your country and many times your family just for the hope of a better life. These people were given no guarantees and certainly they received no help from the government.

Irelands occupiers of 700 years exploited an 1859 famine in such a way as to either starve or force the evacuation to an entire nation. Over 400 thousand emigrated to America and received Legal asylum/immigration status. Many of the men were recruited into the Union army as they stepped on the docks to serve in the Civil War. Despite the hardships and discrimination both nationalities ASSIMILATED and have positively contributed to America. Each to this day acknowledges their heritage, but is now Proudly American First.

My ancestors are German and they first came to America before it was America. They came in the early1700s.They came to get rich ,at least that's what some of our old papers say.Its very interesting ,my ancestors were forbidden to speak German by the German leader of the settlers( about 75 in mumber) and they had to learn English no matter, how badly they spoke it.it must have been very hard on them, but they made it.One of my ancestors is the man Dixon of the Mason/Dixon line.
I love all the genealogy ,its so interesting.

My Great Great Grandparents moved here because they were farmers and the government needed farmers and offered free land to farmers who would come and 'homestead' it for a certain number of years, making it profitable farmland.

They met a need and recouped benefits for doing so.

Legally.

My great grandparents came here from Germany because my Great Grandfather was an aristocrat, my great grandmother a peasant, and they were not allowed to marry. They came here for the freedom.
