toddlers need to be shown as much attention as you can spare them. They are learning to be with and react to other people though you. When he doesn't need as much attention from you, you will see that he is playing more by himself. Having fun without needing anyone else to play with or be around.

I play with my kids as often as I possibly can. There is no time limit on when they need your full attention. If you have free time its good to be spending it with your toddler. Your child develops with interaction, so singing, talking, reading, eating, touching, all helps your child develop to be the person they end up being in the end. If your reading a book, read it aloud, if your cleaning, give him/her a baby wipe so they can help.
As I say all this, I will also say how important it is that you do stuff for yourself too. Take a day once a week (if you can) and do a night out with your friends, book club, or get coffee. You still have to know who you are, or you can't be the best mom or dad you can be.
Love is the most import part of your relationship :)

I don't think there's any such thing as too much playtime. Between myself and my in-laws (my husband's in the Army), my 5 month old son gets played with just about the entire time he's awake (which is just about all the time, since he sleeps through the night and only naps once during the day). Not only is he happy all the time, he's developing quite quickly. I bought some books (365 Games That Smart Babies Play, etc.) and do some of those. Whether it's bathtime or feeding time, it can become playtime with just a little bit of creativity.
Aren't babies fun?

Well it depends if you have other kid in the house. If not then you are pretty much there only source of entertainment and it would be mroe then normal. You should be trying to keep them busy with educational things if you can't be playing with them instead of ploppin them in front of the tv. If I were to put a time on it I would say at least 2 hours a day

I think most 18 month old kids will let you know exactly what they want!
If they want you to play with them, they will ask or whine. You can tell when they are unhappy. Also, if they do not want you to play with them, they will tell you no! Little kids can be very possiessive of thier toys and books, so you will know if you are not wanted.
I think it ok to just keep an eye on them if they are happy. Every so often you can ask them a question about what they are doing.

I think they take about 3 hours worth of naps per day. I spent about 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon and then 2 hours in the evening. Remaining time is spent eating, snacking and then individual play. They need to learn how to occupy themselves sometimes too.
This is best learned while you take time to do chores (30 minute spurts) or prepare a meal (30 minute spurt again).
Hope that helps

I was always taught that it isn't really the quantity of time that you spend but the quality. This is so true for me and my hubby. Make the most out of every minute you have with your son. Because before you know it, they are grown up. You sound like a very caring and loving Mom. Good luck

It depends on how much time you have to accomplish all your chores. I usually spend most of the afternoon after my daughter's nap playing with her, or reading or playing educational video games with her (she's 2). In the mornings she would love for me to sit and play with her but I have chores around the house to get done too. My husband gets home around 5 and so he has about 3 hours to play with her before she goes to bed.
