Obviously it's someone who is a citizen of the United States.

If you're looking for something deeper, I'd say it's someone who cherishes freedom and hopes that every living person can enjoy the same freedoms he or she enjoys. An American has the right to speak freely, live freely and pursue the education and occupation of their choice.

First of all, you don't have to an american to beleive in the things that have been stated already, however I think that all americans beleive in those things. We beleive in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also we believe in this country, no matter what people say, when something bad happens in this country we all stand together. We enjoy the right to not like what our government does, without worring about getting shot for it. We enjoy freedom in many ways, although I think try to push our beleifs on others to much sometimes. There are many other things that make americans what we are. Oh yeah, football and baseball, very american. Hot dogs, burgers and bbq on saturday afternoon. The idea that there is always something better.

An American is an ordinary person who had decided that he/she wants to live life his/her way. He/she has also decided that he/she is willing to form a government that he/she helps to select and he/sh is willing to have some limits on how they will live providing the privileges given up will contribute to a safe and sane country because Americans realize and accept the fact that there is no "total freedom" on earth.

The government they agree to live under is to be one that he/she will select through a voting process and those they have voted for will serve their terms. A permanent membership in the government is something they do not want so they have put limits on how long anyone can serve..

Those Americans have also agreed to contribute a portion of their income to pay for the benefits and security provided by their country.

From there on an American is like every one else.
