I don't want him to become lazy and obese, but It seems to be that these things can really help the brain develop faster and better. There are times when It's impossible to be excercising (like when riding in the car) and this could be a fun way to build reflexes, etc. I would probably lump computer time, TV and video game time into one catagory and give a budget of 1 or 2 hours a day (about what they get now on TV & Computer) and let them decide what medum to use. Suggestions or Comments appreaciated! I'd really like to hear from parents who made one choice and wish they made a different one.

Let him play games that appropriate for his age(fun and educational). You should limit the play time when the weather is good and increase when it is bad. Video games are not harmful like people make them out to be. Also, the child will become accustomed to a world that increasingly embracing computers and video games. They are good learning tools and a fun way to wind down. I think some of the things you said are a good start for doing it.

I have a 4 year old grandson....and he has a game system...but we only buy games right now that he learns from....so he is having fun at the same time without realizing its really teaching him. They are interactive..so we can help him and that way he also gets some great one on one time with us too. I think its a great benefit as long as its not used like a babysitter....I would never just give him a game right now and leave him to it......I want to see him learn. I missed that with my children because I was working...and...there wasnt all this cool stuff out then.
Good Luck !!!!

i have a young cousin (7 years old) who has been allowed NO video games that hook up to the TV - game boy only. his mom says this way, he can play in the car/plane or other long waiting situations, but is less likely to sit around and play while at home. seemed to make sense to me.

denying kids video games entirely probably isnt a good idea, since they'll be more likely to really want them.

i think what's more important isn't denying your kid ways to be lazy, but stressing and teaching the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle.

Go for it. It's especially good if you're lumping it in with TV time and such. My sis and I enjoyed video games as kids, but we weren't allowed to play for hours on end (thereby avoiding the obesity problem;D).

Just make sure you educate yourself about the games you're buying! There is a rating system for games (just like movies), and a 5-year-old should only be playing games rated E (for everyone). You definitely don't want him playing GTA or other games that are created for adults.

HTH!

Dude, it truly is like asking if it truly is incorrect for a lady to make a sandwich...this coming from a woman. I play Syrim, BioShock, COD, Fall Out, and a set of different video games. I also watch anime like, ok Anime, Naruto, Soul Eater, Bleach ect. it truly is not any longer a huge deal. besides the undeniable fact that it truly is not any longer too difficulty-loose both. And at your age, basically be grateful you're not from now on a bronie.

sure i have twin 4 yr olds and they have a few video games, but dont let em sit there and play it for hours on end. shut it off and have em go outside and play and do other things to stimulate their mind.

issues emailing you****

go for a v-smile system they are cheap and my boys really like it. the games are all about learning and the controls are simple for them.
they offer some 2 player games giving them some competition with each other while they are learning. most game systems today are a little to complex for them like x-box, ps2, game cube ect. try some of the arcade game things that have like 10 of the old atari games that plugs dirctly into your tv, if you want simple games that are cheap. as far as one system or two i say stick with one, reinforce the issue of sharing. toys i have found are one thing but a video game changes a child when it comes to sharing, my boys were very good at sharing with each other then i introduced video games to them and its been a little different story, thats why the v-smile is nice cause it has some 2 player games. but keeping strong with the sharing thing wont hurt them at all.

Don't do it.

Those games take over kids life, it's all they ever want to do.
Have your child read a good book or go play basketball outside or help you with dinner.
My cousin got one for his birthday a couple years back and had to get help, I know this isn't the case with all children but i wouldn't want to risk it.
