It is part of their religion. They are "commanded" to go out and spread the word. If they don't, they can get shunned from their congregation. I got rid of them by flirting with the men.

Actually, many religions proselytize. Latter Day Saints (Mormons) also go door to door. In fact proselytizing is so important to the LDS that most young men go on a "mission" to some other part of the world to spread the word. The Southern Baptists actually have conventions where they discuss how best to convert Jews.
I find it offensive and annoying myself. It's like saying "No matter how much you've thought about your religious beliefs, you are wrong, because you don't agree with us."
On the other hand, if you had (or thought you had) something really special, and especially if sharing it wouldn't diminish it, wouldn't you want to tell people about it? How often do you tell someone about a great movie you saw, or a great restaurant where you ate, or a great book you read. Personally, I'm always telling people to read Robert Heinlein, Neil Gaiman, and Bill Bryson.
Now imagine that if someone didn't get what you had, they would suffer horrendously. I mean if someone didn't get a vaccine, they would have a nine times higher chance of dying of cancer. Wouldn't you want to share that? I know I tell a lot of people about the importance of stockpiling food and water in earthquake-prone areas.
These people believe that you only have a short time on this Earth, and that an eternity follows. There is a wonderful place that you can go for that eternity, but you have to have the key to get in. They want you to have that key, too.
Try this: "Thank you for being so concerned about my immortal soul, but I've already made a decision about my religious beliefs, and I don't wish to discuss them."

They are following the biblical tenet... "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" as found in Matthew Ch 28 v 19. I guess they figure if you don't know about it, how could you come to them? So they come to you first.
I have had other religions come to my door too. I think they were Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints or something.
I'm always polite to them and respect their belief and choice. I just let them know that I'm a Christian saved by the blood of Jesus and I already have a personal relationship with Him. Then I take the pamphlet, say thank you and have a nice day.

Spreading the word of their religion is part of their religion...you would be surprised how many people join that way...its all about timing...other religions do do that as well...for instance Mormons, and some fundamentalist Christians leave those books all over and they tell everyone they meet about their religion...I am with you...when I went to pick a church I did my own research and I read books visited churches and then made my decision...I wouldn't of listened to someone who knocked on my door...it would of felt forced.

The very act of knocking on you door to recruit you into their religion is called "Witnessing". It is taken from the New Testament. The Great Commission.
"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."
Although the Jehovah's Witness deny Christ's Deity they do take many things from the Christian religion and it's New Testament and incorporate it into their belief system. The Jehovah's Witnesses have their own rewritten Bible although it copies many Christian Bible texts.
Many other religions practice the doctrine of "The Great Commission" and also "witness" meaning spreading the "word" through preaching, evangelizing, and knocking on our doors. The Mormon Church also uses this form of proselytizing.
The Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons take many things from Christianity and mix it in with their religion.
Salvation is a free gift through Jesus Christ. He said ...
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." Jesus is the way! And it's free.

Because they want to eventually sell you magazines and get you to sell magazines....seriously, the religion is governed not by a religious entity but by a publishing house in New York called Watchtower Books and Tract society (or something like that), they made their own ridiculous version of the bible, and well so many other things I couldn't possibly list them all here...check out this website for more info: http://www.freeminds.org/

They are sadly easy to stop but, you need to know more than they do. I miss them coming to my door as we've had great discussions.
They think of themselves as teachers and love to answer questions. Ask them if Jesus physically rose from the dead in the flesh or as a spirit. (They will say, "As a spirit.") Point out in the Kings James Bible where Jesus talked to Thomas after the resurrection. Jesus said, "A spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.
They probubly won't like coming to your place any more.

They are vectors for the disease of religion. They must go out and infect others so that religion won't dead end or go into remission. You should insult them, tell them where they can stick their booklets and slam the door. For some reason they seem to enjoy this and gain a feeling of superiority by being rebuffed. They are strange.

Its some part of thier religion thing they have to go out in twos to spread the word of Jehova.....Im not posotive how it works but it is something based on thier teachings. I talked with one at my door once, and asked that same question. She explained it so much better then I can but I hope you get the idea...they do it because they have to. Thier church or meeting hall tells them they have to.All because some folks in their bible went out in twos to do this as well....now they feel compelled to follow suit.

** Jehovah's**
They are only doing what is told in the bible.Jesus told the people to keep preaching the good news and that's what they do.Yes sometimes it is aggravating waking up to the doorbell on Saturday mornings but once you tell them you are not interested you can ask them politely to take you off their lists and not to visit you again. But stay polite...They will take you off their "territories"
To the person who mentioned them "selling" magazines...They do not sell them...they are free and always will be. They raise the money to pay for them with VOLUNTARY contributions.Never will they ask or make you pay for the books they have.

I beg to differ, Mormans do it too. Certain religions have a requirement to recruit others to be inthat religion. No I'm not either, I just know people and have had them knock on my door. Before sending them off, I ask a lot of questions.
