In 66 C.E. pagan Roman armies surrounded "the holy city" Jerusalem, which was then the center of Jewish revolt against Rome. Thus, the 'causing of desolation' by the disgusting thing was imminent, and so this was the final signal for discerning Christians to 'flee to the mountains' (Matthew 4:5; 27:53; 24:15,16; Luke 19:43,44; 21:20-22) Following their flight, the desolation of the city and nation occurred, Jerusalem being destroyed in the year 70 C.E., and the last Jewish stronghold, Masada, falling to the Romans in 73 C.E.
In the book of Revelation chapter 17, "Babylon the Great" the world empire of false religion is also depicted as the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. She commits "fornication " with the wild beast (political governments) and tries to desolate God' Kingdom by falsely representing all that it stands for.

Abomination of Desolation
The phrase “abomination [sacrilege] of desolation” occurs with slight variation in Mark 13:14 and Matthew 24:15 (cf. Lk 21:20; 2 Thes 2:3). It probably refers to the desecration of the Jerusalem Temple which signals the nearness of the end of “this world” and the second coming of Christ (parousia). The New Testament usage is informed by two principal Old Testament witnesses. In 1 Maccabees 1:48, the phrase carries with it the notion of desecration and false worship or idolatry. A small altar dedicated to a pagan god (probably Zeus) was placed upon the Jerusalem Temple altar where the God of Israel was worshiped. In Daniel 11:31 (cf. Dn 12:11 and 9:27), the Temple of Jerusalem is defiled by the Syrian monarch Antiochus IV, who erected an altar to Zeus, thus driving Jewish worshipers and even God from that now-desecrated place. The defilement is an “abomination” which God momentarily leaves, resulting in “desolation.”

I hope this helps you.

According to the Watchtower Society, it is the United Nations in its present form, but originally the League of Nations. It is "standing in the holy place" because it stands in the place of God's Kingdom.

The UN (formerly League) is also considered to be the scarlet colored wild beast that climbed out of the abyss after receiving a death stroke. (Revelation 17:8) .

Most JW's are unaware that for some years the WT taught that the League of Nations was the wild beast that HAD ALREADY CLIMBED OUT OF THE ABYSS. Their book LIGHT, book 2, published in the 1930's explains that the first appearance of the beast was in the year 1899 with the formation of the Hague World Court. It then supposedly climbed out of the abyss by being reborn as the League of Nations.

Of course the League eventually disappeared and reappeared as the United Nations, so the Watchtower had to rewrite a little of their history. It would be very unusual to find any JW today who even knows that the League was hailed as the beast in its second appearance. Articles such as the one in the June 1, 1988 Watchtower paint a picture of the WT Society being way ahead of the game, foretelling accurately in advance what was about to happen. Never mentioning their belief at the time that the abominable beast had first appeared in 1899 and that its final form would be that of the League of Nations.

Let the reader understand. I don't. So don't ask me.

Out of one of them came another horn, which started small but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land. It grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them. It set itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; it took away the daily sacrifice from him, and the place of his sanctuary was brought low. Because of rebellion, the host of the saints and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground. Daniel 8:9-12

1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. -2thess1-4

This is obviously speaking of the return of Jesus which is yet to come. Now, the Son of Perdition( the antichrist) is to stand in temple of God showing himself that he is God. I believe that this Son Of Perdition is the Abomination of Desolation that stands in the Holy place that Jesus spoke of in matt 24.

IN SIMPLE TERMS IT IS WHEN THE ANTICHRIST ENTERS INTO THE HOLY PLACE SITS ON THE THROWN AND DECLARES THAT HE IS GOD.

THE TEMPLE WILL HAVE TO BE REBUILD FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, AND THE JEWS ARE LOOKING INTO THAT RIGHT NOW.
