Ataxia is not a disease. Persons having ataxia experience a failure of muscle control in their arms and legs, which can result in a lack of balance and coordination or a disturbance of gait/the way they walk. Ataxia is usually used to describe symptoms, it is sometimes also used to refer to a group of disorders. It is not, however, a specific diagnosis.

Ataxia is symply a symptom of nervous system dysfunction. Basically, it is impaired coordination of the limbs. It could indicate a stroke or other things. When it affects the gait, it is called gait ataxia. I'm still new to the whole neurological area of medicine, but that's the basic gist of it. If you need more info, try talking to a neurologist/your doc.
