There are many ,methods for smaller dogs, but none that will work for boxers..believe me..they will find a way...they will even tear the screens off the house to get together..
I know one that tore the screen off the basement window, went in the basement, and up the stairs..pawed at the basement door until he was able to turn the knob, and when the owner came home from shopping, there they were..in the kitchen....too late...!
It will be necessary to separate them..and even perhaps board the male in a good kennel..but do check out its reputation...

Because where the boxer testosterone is concerned..where there is a will..there is a way...
Even if you were to find the perfect birth control solution, the male will stress himself silly while the female is in heat...You will be so mad at them, that you can't think straight..and the hard feelings are likely to last...Even though he really can't help it...

hermit crab has a great idea.. and i have a boxer story 2 tell.. my daughters boyfriend had this male boxer for 4 years.. from puppyhood on.. we knew the dog a year. very gentle ..and favored my daughter.. someone gave us a female boxer.. the male began breeding with her.. 5 days of breeding and the male claimed ownership of the female. the female was laying on the couch and my daughter took the female by the collar and told her 2 get down.. the male attack my daughter.. my daughter ran into the bathroom 2 get away from the attack.. i was in my room and heard a noise, went out 2 see what was going on.. no one around but the dogs.. the male kinda grabbed my hand and that was unusual.. so i said you want 2 go out.. he ran 4 the door.. i put him on the lead outside the door and picked up the other lead 2 put the female on.. i turned 2 open the door 2 let the female out and the male attacked me.. this all happened a month ago.. we now have no dogs.. yes be careful when breeding..

They will need to be seperated since there is no other way to prevent them from mating.
Unless they are show dogs or have been evaluated by at least 3 unbiased knowledgable people/judges of the breed for breed worthiness, have super pedigrees and you will be having hips/elbows x-rayed and certified by OFA/PennHip, eyes CERF/PRA, thyroid tests done, etc then the best thing is to get them spay/neutered. They will be much happier and healthier for it. Breeding is a very big responsability and can have a lot of serious complications. You will need to know what signs to look for, when to seek help, breeding practices, care of the pregnant female, whelping, newborn care, etc. Breeding isn't a money making venture..it is very expensive and time consuming.

You definitely need to keep them separated and your male is going to suffer just being in the same house with her. He probably won't eat, likely will start marking in the house and he'll whine. They shouldn't even be able to see each other. The best thing for him would be if you could find someone to look after him for 3 weeks.

Not only do they need to be separated, a good rule of thumb is to keep at least two doors between them. Better yet, board the male, otherwise his whining and crying will drive you crazy.

Now this sounds funny but hear me out OK?!

My friend had Jack Russell terriers and was in you're same predicament.

She bought pull ups (cheaper than doggy panties) and duct-tapped them onto the female when she went into heat.

Not only was it hilarious and cute but very effective. Now it may take some getting used to for your female but it will allow her protection and also keep your home more clean if she had discharge which many dogs due while in heat.

I hope this helps you, I know it worked for her and her dogs.

I certainly hope they aren't related...

I think there are diapers you can get for the female while she's in heat.

But really, spaying and neutering is the best way to go. Just go down to the humane society or check out petfinder.com and look at the sad dogs who need homes.

Give the female a cell phone and the male a remote control.

They make doggie pants for the female that you can put on her but your male may tear them off.
Most breeders seperate the dogs so they do not have any accidents

Seperate cages, very close...
Little else you can do except ask doc for a birth control for a dog, he will tell you to seperate them...
