I just got the tests results back and my dog is allergic to Barley, Yeast, Oats, Wheat, Flaxseed, and Beef. Any suggestions...and I'm not particulary excited about the raw diet or barf...

Don't feed Science Diet for those allergies..Solid Gold makes an excellent kibble for allergies, as does Wellness and Innova...check at your local (not chain) pet supply shop, and read the labels..You will find a good food for him..
.If you want to cook for him, send me an email, and I will give you the recipe given by a canine dermatologist..

Sunny, just so you know "hypoallergenic" is not an actual medical term. (It was actually a word a sun-block salesman made up in order to sell more product than his competition a while back) That being said, since the word surfaced it has become a part of our society's main stream dialogue. Hence why even the vet uses it. Keep in mind that dogs become allergic to certain low grade ingredients in commercial dog food. These ingredients can vary from things like corn, corn gluten, wheat fillers, various meat/chicken by-products, etc (this list can go on forever). Many commercially available dog foods simply aren't what's best for our dogs. I like to call these the grocery store pet foods. Any high grade dog food will not cause your dog to have the allergic reactions it does to the lower grade stuff. Do your research, and learn and understand what the ingredients are and how they affect your dogs health. Here's a few really good dog food product lines that will get you started... -Orijen (made here in Canada!) -Nature's Variety & Instinct -Innova EVO -Solid Gold (these are in no particular order) Stick to the dry food, as they offer the best value for quantity. You are paying for about 80% water weight with the wet varieties. Simply moisten your dry kibble with water or some veg/meat broth if you want to feed your dog "wet" food. Also keeping your dog off table scraps, and any type of "human" food, will make it easier to have it eating his/her own dog food. Take care.

Go to http://www.naturesvariety.com and look at their "Raw Instinct" Diet. It's a grain-free kibble, with no Beef. If this isn't for you, you may want to switch to an all-meat canned diet, like Wysong's "au jus" line. Go to http://www.wysong.net for more info.

The best thing to do is take the advice from others, but follow it up with some research yourself. Make sure to get the 'ok' from your vet too, since they can double-check the ingredient panel with the dog's allergy list, and they can check with their other clients to see who is feeding what, and how they like it.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Check out this web site
www.spoiled-rotten-pets.com
Under the Payton IA section they have some of the best info on dog food available and they carry and sell many of these brands.
If you e-mail with them they can most likely help you to find one of them that would be ok for your dog.
They also have info on tha BARF diet and some things you can feed for it.
They are very helpful and should be able to point you towards some good food for your dog.

You will need to be an avid label reader. IVD/Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo make good allergy foods. You could try contacting them. Also take some time to go to a good pet store and read labels on some of the good quality foods there.

you may have to mix your own food up for your dog, or talk to your vet. Some vets may have special dog foods that they can order for you, maybe for allergies. Also I know that Petsmart keeps dog food in freezers when you visit their stores. Iam unsure of the ingreadents but it may be something you want to check out, being that this indicates that it has some form or raw meat or something eles that needs to be kept cold to prevent spoiling. I hope this helps. Good luck.

you may also want to check the internet for such a dog food.

My dog also has a laundry list of food allergies. I feed Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice. They have 2 other allergy formulas. Wellness also makes excellent allergy foods.
