Yes you can. And the process to become a citizen is much quicker, they expidite it for military members, plus the charges are waved. Meaning you won't have to pay an application fee when you start the process of getting your citizenship.
Here, read this, it should tell you what you need to know:

If you are a foreigner living in your own country, apply at the US Embassy Or Consulate, and if everything is up to par, yes you can join.

I was in boot-camp with two guys that were trying to become citizens. One was from Nigeria, the other from India. Although their soldiering skills were "lacking", it amazed me how dedicated these two were that they would serve and fight for America when most citizens refuse too. I would see them at night practicing English with each other and trying to learn the ranks.
I'm not sure if serving in our armed forces speeds up any time you have to wait for citizenship, but it makes sense to me that if you serve this country honorably, then you deserve your status as a citizen as does your wife and kids.

Yes, there are rules that allow permanent resident aliens to join.

I don't know if that has any effect on the amount of time required before someone can become a citizen.

Permanent residents are currently serving as members in the US military.

One of them (originally from Trinidad) from the Baltimore area died in Iraq. He was made a citizen post-homously thanks to US senator and representative.
