My friend's son is 11 years old. When we get together in the evening she has to excuse herself around 9:30-10:00 as she needs to "tuck in" her son. Sometimes she even lies in bed with him till he falls asleep. ( Usually for 2-3 hours) He insists on having her with him before going to bed and refuses to even go to his bedroom till she's there. I know this annoys her sometimes as she tells him to go to bed himself but he flat out refuses and makes a fuss till she gives in and puts him to bed. When I asked her about this she says she doesn't mind and a night time routine is healthy for him. Do you think he's too old to have his mother continue with this routine and should maybe start learning to go to bed himself?

This young man is definitely CONTROLLING that home . MOM is allowing him to . We teach others { even our kids } how to treat us . He is much too old for this kind of behavior . Some people might in see it as indecent . Mom needs to take back control NOW , not later it will be much too late . You could talk to her , but never try to discipline the boy yourself , he will only rebel !

Why do parents never see the relationship with their child as a two-way relationship? The child needs this in his life. The woman had a child, and therefore obligated herself to providing for his needs.
Unless the child is an absolute weirdo, he won't do this forever: maybe another year or so... "put up with it" and enjoy the fact that the child needs his mother right now, because it won't always be that way. She will look back fondly on the years that she had to "tuck him in" and put him to bed like this, and conversely he could resent her and become a problem child for years if his simple loving request is neglected.. she would probably regret avoiding him instead of spending more loving time with him anyway.

a routine at night is a good thing but at 11 years of age he should be able to walk himself to bed and go to sleep. Her giving in to him is only making the matter worse she needs to find a new routine and stick with it no matter how big of a fit he throws or she could be doing this forever. His need for her will only get worse if she continues to give when ever he throws a fit. I know because I am in the same situation of trying to break my 3 year old from climbing in bed with me in the middle of the night.....
