I THINK the reason for that is when you talk, you hear yourself though your ears and through vibrations and sounds traveling in your cheek bones and face to the ear canal. When you hear a recording, it sounds differently because of the fact you are just using your ears and because of the medium it travels through (aka speakers). Also, you sound different to other people because of everyone individuality.

As far as my voice, it's just a plain female voice with some squeak to it here and there. I like it, I guess I have no choice though.

It's even weirder if you listen to a past recording. I found one of my 16 year old self a few months ago (I'm 43). I had a heavy Oldham (Lancashire) accent, sounded like a Smurf and kept saying stupid things (that's not changed actually.)

The thing is we hear our own voices differently because of the resonance through our own bodies. My voice always sounds deeper and more stupid than the squeak I tend to hear when I speak!

Yeh - and what I want to know is which is the 'real' voice. Because frankly, if I sound like do on an answer machine, I want a vocal chord transplant now!

I have always been told by men, and women that i speak nice, and that my voice is really pleasing to the ear, most men say they love the way i speak because my voice is sexy...cant hear it myself, but there you go.

I sound much deeper than I think I do, its really strange. It's also the time when I hear how strong my accent is and I can't stand that at all!

Yup.

I takes about a year to get over being self-conscious about it.

For a while I used different EQs and pitch shifters to make it sound different.
