The Matriach doesn't necessarily have to be the older or oldest of the females. She has good advice, counsel and a "glowing aura". She's usually the one everyone wants to stay over, eat at her house.

I don't think that it is true that most African American people say Ma'dea. I have heard more people say Big Mama than Ma'dea. As a matter of fact the first time I ever heard Ma'dea was on one of Tyler Perry's plays. Most of the African American people I know call there grandmother Mother. Like in my husband's family, everyone calls his grandma, Mother, even the grandchildren and the great grandchildren call her Mother. I have to admit I do to. Maybe Ma'dea is a regional thing, but to answer your question (sorry about the long explanation) most of the Caucasians that I know call there grandma MeMa or MawMaw or something like that.

Do you mean grandmother or mother? Most call their grandmothers Grandma, but I've heard Meemaw, Mimi, Grams, Granny (particularly in the south), Ma, and Mammy or Grandmammy.

For mothers, I think most call them Mom, Mama, Mommy, or Ma. Unless they're British; then it might be Mum or Mummy.

Less commonly for both mothers and grandmothers, I've heard people just use first names, or a combination of one of the above and a first or last name (i.e. Mama Sally or Grandma Smith).

Causasians are predominantly patriarchial. Grandma would be just that and Aunts are Aunts. I did a quick Wikipedia search for Caucasian Matriarchs and got back not one entry in English. That tells the tale.

I think Ma'dea is used mostly back east. My people down south tend to use the term "Big Mama". Yeah, what do caucasian people call their "Big Mamas"? Good question, Dr Ed.
