My husband and I are booking our trip home for Christmas. We are dying to take our year old maltese puppy but are scared to death since she can be really hyper and will probably bark alot. Since it is Christmas time I know we will not be able to get a flight that is not packed. I thought about contacting her vet and seeing if they would approve some kind of sedative but after reading online it looks like the vet community frowns on that. I will not let her ride in cargo, she has to fly with me. Anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate anything. Thanks!

You can't give her a sedative, as it is against airline rules, and is not safe for her..BUT, you can safely give her chamomile tea..
Give her Chamomile tea, to help her relax and calm down.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for her. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed,. Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before she needs to relax. It will keep her happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.
Try it out well before traveling, so you will know how much it affects her, and how long the calmness lasts...That way you will know just when to give it..
You will find it at your grocer's in the tea section..

I think the vets frown on sedating cargo hold dogs because they're going to be under stress with temp and pressure changes. Riding in a carrier under your seat isn't much different than a car trip and shouldn't be a problem to give her something to calm her down. Otherwise you should start getting her used to the kennel you'll be using. put her in while your watching tv, doing bills whatever and tell her "no" when she barks. If she's quite a while give her a treat and calm praise. She'll learn that the kennel is a place to calm down and that barking won't get her attention or let out. Good luck

well a seditive would be ideal, and any good vet would aprove one for a flight because of the stress it puts on the animal. However if this is not an option try to not feed the dog at least 5 hours before your flight, and no water 2 hours before. Walk the dog right before the flight and make sure not to get the dog to hyped up with play. About an hour before your flight (or before you leave you house) play with your dog for at least a good half hour to get him/her tired out. Then its just little things to keep him/her quiet. Try a chew toy in the cage to keep it entertained, or small bits of kibble to give to him/her while you fly(although you may want to use caution to avoid doggie air sickness) you also may want to include a favortie toy, and blanket.

Not sure if you can take the sweetie in the cabin with you or not.. If not or even if you can.. I would advise giving the pet a sleeping pill of some type to take the hyper out of it... that is the way I travelled with my pets.. from Africa to the US and also from Asia to the US

They may frown on the mild sedative, but they are not the one flying with her. Put her blanket in her little carry on so she will have her scent. Good luck to you.

get a barking collar. if you don't like the ones that shock get the ones that spray water in the dog's face, harmless sprays of water. and maybe put your dog under your seat, on your lap, or beside you.
