Satan was as sure he would not defeat God as God was. Satan was making a display, fully knowing what the cost would be. What could have been his reason? What could be so important to sacrifice his relationship with God?

Watch your nomenclature. Lucifer is a figure from classical mythology. The name means "light-giver" and refers to his stealing fire from the Olympian gods and giving it to humanity. The use of Lucifer as synonymous with Satan is common but without scriptural foundation.

As to the question of why Satan would rebel, are you open to considering that the reason the story doesn't make sense is that it's malarkey?
(Again, the lack of scriptural basis for that tale.)

Satan and Lucifer are different entities. Satan is Ancient Serpent, the Dragon and the Devil who deceived the world. Read Rev. 20:2 And Lucifer is a man called the 'Morning Star, Son of the Morning." Read Isaiah 14:12-20 and stop at verse 17 to see if he is Satan or a man. If you have the Bible of King James, you will notice the that calling given to Morning Star is "Lucifer". So, make your readings before you call the name Lucifer as Satan.

Lucifer resigned from heaven. God, being the well-documented sadist that he is, no doubt wanted to keep Lucifer around so that he could punish him and try to get him back under his (God's) power. Probably what really happened was that Lucifer came to hate God's kingdom, his sadism, his demand for slavish conformity and obedience, his psychotic rage at any display of independent thinking and behavior. Lucifer realized that he could never fully think for himself and could certainly not act on his independent thinking so long as he was under God's control. Therefore he left Heaven, that terrible spiritual-State ruled by the cosmic sadist Jehovah, and was accompanied by some of the angels who had had enough courage to question God's authority and his value-perspective. Lucifer is the embodiment of reason, of intelligence, of critical thought. He stands against the dogma of God and all other dogmas. He stands for the exploration of new ideas and new perspectives in the pursuit of truth.

Kind of depends on what version of the story you believe. In some versions of Christian doctrine, Lucifer was guilty of pride and refused to accept God, claiming the title for himself, and was thus thrown down for his rebellon. In this interpretation, he very well could have believed he could defeat God -- since Lucifer was one of the higher angels (or possibly a seraph... the story varies with each telling), he was pretty powerful, and if he believed himself worthy of godhood, why not go against the being claiming to be the true god?

In a more eastern interpretation, the devil is depicted as more of the greatest lover of God in existence, who worshipped the Lord more than any other. When God created man and told all the heavenly host to also pay homage to God's greatest creation, the devil refused to bow to any before God, and was cast down for his disobedience. In Persian myth, the devil's greatest torment in hell is being forever denied the sight of God's beatific face, and what sustains him in hell is the memory of God's voice when He said, "Begone!"

Lucifer, in Isaiah, wasn't Satan.... It's in reference to the Babylonian King. Lucifer means Lightbearer... and in Paganism is the son of Venus (The Morning Star). But biblically, it is only in reference to a man that thought more of himself than what was real. Symbolism to show the downfall of an egotist.

Same reason we all do the things we do in defiance of God - we have our will. We enjoy exercising our will. Even when we know that our will is not necessarily going to keep us on the road to success.

What could be so important - Self Will.
