The answer is 42.

...More seriously, life is what you make it. You have to create your own meaning. If the meaning of your life is to make as much money as possible and to get your biological needs met, there's nothing wrong with that, I think.

If you don't want a "faith-based" answer, then what kind of answer do you expect? If there is no god, then all that we are here for is to consume the world's resources, produce poop, and die (And, oh yea, reproduce, so that we can make new little poop making machines just like ourselves -- the universe can't get enough waste, apparently!).

"The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I here for?"
by Rick Warren - Religion - 2002 - 336 pages

You are not an accident. Even before the universe was created, God had you in mind, and he planned you for his purposes. These purposes will extend far beyond the few years you will spend on earth. You were made to last forever!Self-help books often suggest that you try to discover the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself, but Rick Warren says that is the wrong place to start. You must begin with God, your Creator, and his reasons for creating you. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. This book will help you understand why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you--both here and now, and for eternity. Rick Warren will guide you through a personal 40-day spiritual journey that will transform your answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? Knowing God's purpose for creating you will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life, and, most importantly, prepare you for eternity. The Purpose-Driven(TM) Life is a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st century--a lifestyle based on God's eternal purposes, not cultural values. Using over 1,200 scriptural quotes and references, it challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. In the tradition of Oswald Chambers, Rick Warren offers distilled wisdom on the essence of what life is all about. This is a book of hope and challenge that you will read and re-read, and it will be a classic treasured by generations to come.

I find nothing wrong with goals of financial success. But the older I get the more I find that love is what counts... Not sex I am talking about love. Like the picture of a hand turkey my grand daughter drew for me last Thanksgiving with a simple message in block letters written by her unschooled hand that said I love your grandpa. That's what life is all about. Of course this extends into my relationship with Christ. The whole picture of our creation to our salvation shows that God created us so He could manifest His love... Why were we born, because of Love. Where did we come from, Love. What is our most important goal, to love and to be loved... Jim

we are born to gain a body and go through this test which is called life. We were all spirit children of God that came down to take this test to prove that we are worthy to return to Him. Of course you need goals that are not just temporal. I suggest you make goals that go further then just temporal pleasure of anykind. Make goals that will bring you happiness. not just happiness that comes and goes but happiness that penetrates you so deep that no matter what happens if you loose your money, house, family, anything you will still have that happiness.
