I took phentermine years ago prescribed by a non military doctor. Now I am in the military and was wondering if any military people on here knew whether or not it would be allowed for me to take it. If I got it precribed from a civilian doctor would I have to inform the military? It's the only way I've ever been able to lose weight but I don't want to get in trouble for it.

As long as you have a valid prescription, you're OK. It doesnt matter if its from a military doctor or a civilian one.
If you get it from a civilian doctor, there is no requirement to tell your chain of command, but if you see a military doctor about something and he asks what medications you are on you should tell him.

What should I avoid?

Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects.
Phentermine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
