do you have a puddle of oil under your car (left side, near back of engine compartment) or under your brake pedal inside the car?

Had one fail on one of my cars. The biggest sign was that brake fluid kept disappearing. The brakes would get spongy, too. Be warned - many of the signs can apply to other parts of the brakes failing, too. The only sign that it must be the master cylinder is if you can see the brake fluid seeping out of it - often, it will leak into the inside of the car through the area where the brake pedal attaches.

Look for brake fluid where the m/c and booster meet, when sitting at a standstill with your foot on the brake pedal the pedal will slowly creep down if the m/c is bypassing internally or you have a leak in the hydraulic system

If the brake pedal is going to the floor that would be a sure sign, and check your brake fluid
